Most descriptions of Calexico’s music come coated with Americana clichés (like dust, prairies, cowbows, ...). Their style is hard to define. Between deep american country and mexican sound. Their style matches well with their name: Calexico – California, Mexico.

This album isn’t my favourite but it is nonetheless, a very good and interesting experience. They experiment, widen their influences and produce more complex and different tunes.

Singing Nom De Plume in French and boiling up a crescendo of electric guitars on the likes of Deep Down, whose lyrics could well be an allegory for Iraq. And to trash another stereotype of Americans, even the lengthy All Systems Red comes without an inch of flab.
